Sometimes the larger towns or cities had soldiers' barracks or camps just outside the town's walls, such as the Praetorian camp in Rome.

∙ 15y agoThe first thing the Roman army did when it finished a march was to erect a fortification fo some sort - either short term or long term - which could be easily defended. The soldiers lived inside this in tents, or in more permanent structures when necessary.
