Sometimes the larger towns or cities had soldiers' barracks or camps just outside the town's walls, such as the Praetorian camp in Rome.
The first thing the Roman army did when it finished a march was to erect a fortification fo some sort - either short term or long term - which could be easily defended. The soldiers lived inside this in tents, or in more permanent structures when necessary.
In war they lived in the barracks or out in the field in tents. When not at home alot still had to live at the barracks to defend against possible surprise attacks
