Roman Catholic AnswerYour question sounds as if you are accusing the monasteries of withholding the classics from the common people. Far from it, the monks were the ones who managed to preserve them for centuries when few could read, much less afford books - which are all copied out by hand at that time. The things that made the classics available to common people were a) the printing press (making numerous cheap copies available) and b) mandatory education (enabling people to read).
