Rome was on seven hills. Hills were easier to defend from raids. Rome was on the only Ford river Tiber, which runs east-west from the mountains to the east of Rome to the coast to14 miles to its west. This made Rome the main north-south communication point in the region. Being inland, it was safe from naval raids. The nearby mountains had abundant water sources. The Romans brought the water to the city by building aqueducts.

As Rome expanded into the Mediterranean Sea, Italy provided a favourable location. It lies in the middle of this sea, between its western and eastern basins. This made it easier to control both the western and eastern Mediterranean.
