Yes. The simple reason being that - certainly in the 19th and early 20th century - the working classes had to spend all their energy on simply surviving, while the upper classes mostly focused on managing their estates. The middle classes were the ones that on the one hand were able to get a decent education and on the other hand had good jobs that also triggered their curiosity on how things could be done better - and they had enough leisure time to spend on study or experimenting..
