Self-appointed emperors in the west were: usurpers who were proclaimed by their legions and came into conflict with the actual emperor; Petronius Maximus after he was involved in the assassination of Valentinan III; Avitus, who was supported militarily by the Visigoths.

Odoacer did not proclaim himself emperor. After deposing Romulus Augustus he declared that Rome did not need an emperor, claimed that Romulus Augustus had given him governance of Italy and only asked for patrician status. Zeno, the emperor of the east, recognised Odoacer as governor of Italy on his behalf, provided that he recognised Julius Nepos (who had been deposed by Romulus Augustus' father) as emperor of the west. Jiulius Nepos was murdered by his own military leaders four years later.

What was the fate of the Western Roman Empire?

Did the halves of the Roman empire attack each other?

The eastern and western parts of the Roman Empire were two parts of a sole Roman Empire and never attacked each other. They did not attack each other because they were part of the same empire. In fact there ware alternations of periods with co-emperors (with one in charge of the east and one in charge of the west) and periods with a sole emperor for the whole of the empire. In 307 Galerius, the senior emperor in the eastern part, attacked Maxentius, a usurper emperor in Italy. However, this was not an attack of the east on the west. It was an attempt to deal with usurpation. Finding himself in a vulnerable position, Galerius did not engage Maxentius, withdrew from Italy and proclaimed Licinius as senior emperor in the west and Constantine as junior emperor in the west. Maxentius was eventually defeated by Constantine, who, after winning a civil war against Licinius (who had become senior emperor of the eastern part of the empire after the defeat of Maxentius) became the sole emperor of the whole Roman Empire. Theodosius I attacked Magnus Maximus a usurper emperor who took over the provinces of the western part of the Roman Empire except for Italy. Theodosius won. After this the emperor of the western part of the empire, Valentinian II, was found hanging in his room and there was another usurper emperor, Eugenius. Theodosius defeated him and became the sole emperor of the whole of the Roman Empire.

Why did the Roman Empire split into the Eastern and Western Roman Empire?

The empire was never split into two parts. Eastern Roman Empire and Western Roman Empire are terms which have been coined by historians. The Romans has only one term: Roman Empire. Emperor Diocletian created a tetrarchy (rule by four). He was a senior emperor with fellow general Maximian who was his co-emperor. Maximian was senior emperor in the west and Diocletian was senior emperor in the east. Two junior emperors were also appointed. They were subordinate to the senior emperors and took charge of areas of the frontiers which were under the greatest pressure from attacks from outside, the river Rhine in the west and the river Danube in the east. The four units were administrative units of a single empire. Diocletian stressed that the empire was indivisible. The arrangement was designed to improve the defence of the vast frontiers of the empire which were constantly attacked.
