The emperor Constantine I (or the Great) did not move the imperial capital of the Roman Empire from Rome to Byzantium. He moved the imperial capital of the eastern part of the Roman Empire from Nicomedia (in north-western Turkey) to the nearby Byzantium, which he redeveloped and renamed after himself -- Constantinople (City of Constantine). Milan remained the imperial capital of the western part of the empire.
Nicomedia and Milan had been designated as the imperial capitals of the east and west respectively by the emperor Diocletian. Rome had already ceased to be the imperial capital before Constantine.

The Capital of the empire was not actually moved from Rome to Constantinople. Earlier, under Emperor Diocletian, the empire was given two new capitals: Milan became the capital of the empire in the west, and Nicomedia (in northwestern Turkey) became the capital in the east. Rome became only a nominal capital without any imperial courts. What Constantine I did was moving the capital of the east from Nicomedia to the nearby Constantinople, the redeveloped and renamed Byzantium. Constantine I actually renamed it Roma Nova (New Rome), but people called it Constantinople and the name stuck.

∙ 12y agoThe roman emperor Constantine moved the capital to Constantinople primarily because of his new religion, Christianity. He also moved it there because the eastern side of Rome was more stable while the western side was being attacked by tribes such as Gaul and the Visigoths. He split the empire into two and separated the west and the east into eastern and western Rome. Rome remained the capital of western Rome and Constantinople remained the Eastern capital and the capital of the entire empire.
