Many of the Germanic tribes began invading the Roman empire in order to gain territory as they were being pushed from their traditional homelands by other tribes from the east such as the Huns who in turn were being pushed by other eastern tribes such as the Mongols. This population shift occurred when the Roman empire was weak and vulnerable.
