Helping the mamertines: Syracuse attacked the Mamartine garrison at Messana On Sicily -> Mamertines asked Carthage for help -> Carthage agree to aid the Mamertines but they did not want to leave -> Therefore, the Mamertines asked Rome for help in expelling the Cathaginians and Rome obliged. -Zi YiNg Defence: Early Rome already lived in fear of its more powerful neighbour,Carthage ->Rome became more worried when Carthage occupied Messana(northeast corner of Sicily) -> Reason: Geographically, Messna was near to the Greek Towns of Italy under Roman protection -> Romans were concerned that Carthage would want to dominate southern Italy, the same way it had in Sicily -> Thus, Romans decided to fight and defeat Carthage in order to protect its frontier. -Zi YiNg [Adapted from History TB(Sec1), Published by River Valley High School. SGP] One reason is because they wanted land. There wasn't much land back then because people had thought that the world was square, so they were to scared to go and fall of the edge. Another reason is that they hated Christians, so they wanted to kill them all. Yet another reason is because if you go to war and succed than you are in the higher class. Probably more than one hundred peoples and states fought the Romans over the 1,200 years of her history. Their seasons for fighting varied. In the early days of Rome, many of her neighbours attacked her or her territories, probably to counter her growing power in the region. Some of neighbours who invaded territories to her south attacked her territories to ravage them. Some peoples fought Rome because of rivalry over the control of territories. One king in Turkey fought Rome because he wanted to expand his kingdom and take over as much of Turkey as he could. Some peoples fought against Roman expansion or Rome's campaigns of conquests. The Jews rebelled against Roman rule. Quite a large number of peoples fought the Romans because they carried out raids into the Roman Empire of tried to invade parts of it. Some of invasions were successful. The western part of the Roman Empire fell because of invasions by Germanic peoples who took over its lands.

There are adherents to single factors, but more people think a combination of such factors as Christianity, decadence, lead, monetary trouble, and military problems caused the Fall of Rome. Imperial incompetence and chance could be added to the list. Even the rise of Islam is proposed as the reason for Rome's fall, by some who think the Fall of Rome happened at Constantinople in A.D. 1453
