Augustus Caesar, the former Octavian, was the adopted son of Julius Caesar. After a civil war, which he won, he became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. He transformed the government from the republic to the principate.(The principate is often erroneously called the "Roma Empire") He reformed the army, established stable borders, began the 200 year era of peace called the Pax Romana. Under his rule, the city of Rome was beautified, the water system refurbished, and other accommodations for citizens were made. Literature flourished, and the Augustan era is often called the Golden Age of Rome.
He was important because many people consider him the first emperor. (Rome actually had been an empire under the Republic for many years) However his rule transformed the Republic into the Principate, with one person holding all the powers, yet giving limited authority to the magistrates under him. He was also Rome's rebuilder. His friend Marcus Agrippa actually paid for and designed all the renovations, but the credit went to Augustus. He reformed the army, raising pay and cutting legions. He tried to rebuild the Roman population which had been devastated by the civil wars, by passing his family legislation. He had the longest reign of any emperor, and thus the longest time to implement his reforms.
A notable achievement of Augustus was turning the Roman Republic into an Empire. He was the Emperor of the Roman Empire for 41 years.

Augustus Caesar was born Gaius Octavius Thurinus, after his adoption by Julius Caesar he called himself Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, soon dropping the Octavianus and using Caesar as his surname once his adoption was ratified. He is known as Octavian in the history books to eliminate confusion between him and Julius Caesar. When he received the title Augustus he became Augustus Caesar and was known by that name.
