In the feudal system, the nobles are the descendants of the officers who conquered the lands. The King was the Leader. The Counts or Barons were the Generals. Lesser Nobles were the Colonels and so on down the line. The same thing is happening in Cuba today. In Communism, all comrades are equal. As capitalism intrudes, the Generals become more equal. The Generals own the large tourist hotels. They get rich. The Colonels own less but are still well off. The average comrade lives in abject poverty.

Nobles were a class of people just below that of royalty. Often, they had royal blood flowing in their veins, but were not fortunate enough to be king or queen. In England, for example, they were typically dukes, marquises, earls, and barons.

These are broad categories for the class system in medieval Europe:

Royalty/royal meant kings, queens, princes, and princesses.

Nobility/Noble indicated lords, squires, knights, barons, earls, marquises, and dukes. These individuals usually had some royal blood in their lineage.

Gentility/gentry included the wealthy classes, wealthy working classes, landowners, and individuals of "gentle" birth. It was not uncommon that these individuals had noble and royal blood in their backgrounds.

Commoners/peasants/serf was the class of people where most of the population was found. These individuals often lived in poverty and were rarely landowners. They worked for the more privileged upper classes, as well as wealthy landowners and businessmen. More likely than not, traces of royal and noble bloodlines could be found in their ancestry.

it was customary for the king's vassals to divide their fiefs among lesser nobles, who became their vassals.

Nobles were important because they helped the king to run his lands. They also provided wealth and workers who would in turn help the kingdom as a whole succeed.

The kinds of people that would have been considered nobles in the middle ages would be upper class people that had a lot of money. No one is really called a noble anymore.
