Before the war companies were making all sorts of products. During the war companies were asked to make things on their machines that were useful for the war effort. This meant that a company that made cooking pots might have made shells for cannons and clothes makers might have been asked to make uniforms or parachutes, car makers might have been making tank parts etc. After the war there was no need for shells or tanks so the companies went back to making products they made before. Unfortunately there was a big problem with raw materials, so many of the products were adapted.

Companies would have needed to make products people wanted and needed. They had to make them out of whatever materials they could get.

In most countries like Britain there was a shortage of housing, and basic furniture and several companies were commissioned by the government to make low cost furniture and even temporary housing out of timber frames and corrugated iron. Even Jewellery from the late 1940s and Early 1950s was often made from cheap materials like plastic.
