The Federals
The Confederates, also known as the Rebels or the South, were states that seceded from the United States of America. The Union, also known as the Federals or the North, were the states that remained in the US and fought to retain the US as a single country.
United States of America (Union/Federals/Yankees) vs. Confederate States of America (Confederate(s)/Rebs). The Generals were Maj. Gen. Irvin McDowell (Union) and Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard (Confederate) at First Bull Run, and Maj. Gen. George McClellan (Union) vs. Gen. Robert E. Lee (Confederate) at Second Bull Run. Both battles resulted in a Confederate victory.
The battle of Cold Harbor was a Confederate victory. However the Federals didn't give up the conquered ground and dug in within a hundred yards from the Rebels' entrenchment, thus strengthening the pressure over the enemy's line. The Union lost 7,000 men dead or wounded, the Confederate losses were less than 1,500.
'Federate' sounds like a mix of Federal and Confederate. The Confederates were the breakaway Southern states. What was left of the USA was called the Union - also called the Federals. There were many battles between North and South. The war was eventually won by the Union.
At 5 AM on the morning of April 6, 1862, a federal combat control ran into approaching Confederate forces. Initially the federals received reinforcements, however bu 8 AM they fell back as the entire Confederate assault was underway causing a panic among the Union soldiers.
