The AUSTRALIAN FSB's Coral & Balmoral (Fire Support Bases; referred to as "Firebases"), were quickly built during the 1968 TET Offensive, just north of the South Vietnamese Capital. Australian Centurian tanks & M-113's (APC/Armored Personnel Carriers) of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps, reinforced Australian Infantrymen & 105mm Field Guns that were under siege at Firebases Coral & Balmoral, which were only about 2 miles apart from each other. The combined NVA/VC attacks were beaten back by the Australian mounted forces. Firebase Coral had been over-run, with ONE field gun taken, but was recaptured later. This battle was considered larger than the Australian's fight at Long Tan. See Book: "The Battle of Coral. Vietnam Fire Support Base Coral and Balmoral 1968." The battles to defend the besieged AUSTRALIAN FIREBASES Coral & Balmoral took place during the 1968 TET Offensive, in Military Region III (III Corps), near the South Vietnamese Capital of Saigon. Although Firebase Coral was over-run by combination NVA/VC units, and one Australian 105mm Field Gun was taken, the base was re-taken by Australian Mounted Units consisting of Centurian tanks and M-113's (APC's-Armored Personnel Carriers), which reinforced the 1st & 3rd Australian Royal Infantry. Australian firebases Coral & Balmoral were the scene of Australia's first "native tank" actions; their famous Centurion medium gun tanks (20 pounders/84mm). Australia was the only allied force in the Viet War to utilize their own armor. Everyone else had to use US tanks (US policy). Coral & Balmoral were simply hit during the '68 Tet offensive like everybody else was hit. This counts the aftershocks.
