There were banners available with one, two three, four or more stars. You got a banner with a blue star for every member of the household who was away in the service. If one (or more) of them died you got a banner with gold stars for them. There is still an active organization, the National Association of Gold Star Mothers.
The Silver Star banner meant a member of that household was serving in the Armed Forces. They were available with as many stars as necessary (some families had multiple members in the services). If a family member lost their life, the silver star was replaced with a gold star.
