In the American Civil War that lasted from 1861 into 1865, a number of significant differences can be identified that served as basic causes. The most important, however, was the difference between the North and the South on the issue of slavery: Southerners generally deemed slavery as acceptable or even as necessary or inevitable, while Northerners generally considered the institution to be unlawful and even immoral.
