Yes, but not alone. WW2 was a growing pain of civilization that involved all manner of ideologies and beliefs. In my mind, WW2 didn't end till the Cold War did, and to a degree World War has not ceased since what we call the Second World War. Combat fought between organized nations has become the norm.

No ofcourse not, many allied countries contributed to the winning WW2!

This can never be anything but a matter of patriotic opinion. As an American myself, my opinion is that we did not.

Remember that Britain, or the British Empire as it then was, held off Germany for years all alone. During that time the US gave Britain weapons and supplies, but Britain did all the fighting, bleeding, and dying.

The Battle of Britain was Germanys 1st defeat in WW2 and it was a defeat by the hands of the British, although the Germans devistated London in the Blitz the Germans were shocked at how the British public carried on everyday life as normal, the Germans were exspecting the British to be hiding away in shelters. After the Germans were defeated in the Battle of Britain and shocked by the British peoples courage and bravery, the Germans and Hitler offerd Britan peace but the British refused Hitlers offer of peace,Hitler and Germany then left Britain alone and moved on to try there luck against the Soviet Union instead.

After the Germans attacked the Soviet Union in 1942, the Soviet Army rebuilt itself, fought back, and crushed German army after German army on the Eastern Front. The tank battles on the Eastern Front were huge, much larger than anything the US encountered.

Was the US contribution vital? Yes. Would Britain and the Soviet Union have been able to defeat Germany without the US? Nobody knows, but Germany couldn't invade Britain, they tried for years but Britain saw them off. Could the US have done it without Britain and the Soviet Union? It doesn't seem possible. It was hard enough to invade Europe from across the English Channel. Imagine trying to do it across the entire Atlantic Ocean!

Germany had tried for years to invade Britain but could never achieve it,Britain has remained uninvaded since 1066.

The biggest gainers of WW2 were the Russians, they got everything they wanted from WW2.

The accepted view is the Allies won led mainly by USA in the Pacific, but also with efforts by the British, Australians Indians and New Zealand in various theatres.

The accepted view is that the Atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki won the war, but curiously the head of Japan's Atomic bomb project visited Hiroshima the day after it was bombed and advised the Japanese war cabinet not to surrender as the Americans could not possibly have more nuclear weapons.

Thus Nagasaki had to be bombed three days later but still Japan refused to surrender. Japan was confident an atomic bomb which they were developing in Korea at Konan (now called Hungnam) could turn the tide of war for Japan, however the Soviets then invaded Manchuria overrunning huge territory.

They also invaded Korea from the North and used paratroop landings at Konan to seize Japan's A-bomb laboratory. Fighting in Korea did not cease until late October 1945. In fact Japan and Russia are still technically in a state of war with each other as Japan has never accepted Soviet occupation of Sakhalin Island or the Kuril Islands.

It was the loss of their nuclear laboratory in Konan which finally made Japan accept the inevitable and sign a peace deal a week after it suffered a nuclear attack.

Technically one could say that USA did most of the hard work, but Japan refused to surrender until it faced Soviet invasion in August 1945.
