On the northern border of Communist North Vietnam, was (is) Red China. On North Vietnam's western border is Laos; on N. Vietnam's eastern border is the ocean. Their southern border used to be the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone), below which was South Vietnam. Today however, it's all one country, so today, Vietnam's southern tip is also bordered by the sea. The western border of former South Vietnam is Cambodia. Lao's western border is Thailand; Cambodia's western border is Thailand. Laos & Cambodia were NOT officially involved with the Vietnam War. But they certainly were involved unofficially. Fighting the actual war officially, was the US, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and of course, The Republic of South Vietnam. The enemy was North Vietnam & their southern allies, the Viet Cong (VC) guerillas. War material aid (tanks, jet fighter aircraft/MIG-17's, MIG-21's came from the Soviet Union; the MIG-19's (J-6 models) came from Red China, artillery, patrol boats, SAM's-Surface to Air Missiles, etc.) were all supplied by the Soviets & Red Chinese. North Vietnamese pilots spent up to 2 years in the Soviet Union learning how to fly MIG fighter aircraft. North Viet pilots also trained in Communist China. North Vietnamese pilot trainees had to learn Russian so that they could communicate with their instructors. For further information, see: MIG-17 and MIG-19 Units of the Vietnam War.
