Thus, the US Congress had to either pay just the Northerners (Federal, Union, Yankee Armies, US Army, US Navy, etc.) or both...THEY WERE BOTH AMERICANS. This may have caused "a problem" for the US treasury department.

It had to invade and conquer a vast area to win; the southerners had only to defend and not lose, to perhaps eventually gain their objectives. So the north's manpower advantage was just sufficient to achieve the conquest of the south. Virtually every man in the south of military age was in the Confederate service; the north never really came close to completely mobilizing all its manpower resources.

You could make a case for either the Election of Abraham Lincoln as President OR the Emancipation of the slaves; but the South saw them as one in the same. Lincoln actually didn't want to free the slaves; he believed that slavery would eventually end naturally and he believed that it should be ended by containing slavery and then just letting it fall apart on itself. The South believed that Lincoln would free the slaves so as soon as he was elected Southern States began to seceed. The funny thing is that it's because of their secession that Lincoln freed the slaves.
