The U.S. military were pulled out of Vietnam in 1973 after the signing of the Paris Peace Accords. South Vietnam was left to defend itself with supplies and training supplied by the U.S.

North Vietnamese forces moved slowly until late 1974, when they began a major push into the northern provinces of South Vietnam. They completed the sweep south by April, 1975 when North Vietnamese forces took over the Presidential Palace compound in Saigon, and declared the two Vietnams unified.

As far as the Cold War is concerned, the fall of the Berlin Wall dividing democratic and communist sides of the city in November of 1989 was the iconic 'beginning of the end' for the cold war and the unraveling of the Union of Socialist Republics.
