the cold war was characterised by more than one thing. Firstly it was the time of Nuclear fear. everyone was scared of the nuclear war that was bound to happen, especially in the cuban missile crisis in 1962. Seccond it was a period characterized by the struggle between communism and capatalism. Mainly between the USA and the USSR. Also between these to Superpowers was the space race. this was also another characteristic of the cold war.
It was alled the cold war because it wasn't an actual war. Compared to a "hot" war (a standard war with actual conflict/battles) this "war" was "cold" because there wasn't any fighting. It was a world wide rivalry between the Soviet Union and the United States, but there wasn't any actual fighting
