During the Revolutionary War the American General, Nathaniel Green, drove the British General, Lord Cornwallace and his army, out of North Carolina. The big battle occurred at Guilford Court House. The British army kept attacking and the American Army kept retreating. The British army lost half its solders and the American army lost very few solders. At the end of the day, Lord Cornwallace realized that General Green had copied the battle tactics of Genghis Khan. That night Lord Cornwallace gathered the remains of his army and retreated toward the town that would become Fayetteville, North Carolina. From there Lord Cornwallace retreated to the coast and sailed to Virginia, Yorktown, and surrender.

There were hundreds of battles fought in the American Revolution. Congress voted that the first battle and victory occurred at Point Pleasant Virginia in 1774. The State of New Hampshire complains because they had an earlier battle. The Americans won battles at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts in 1775. The Battle of Saratoga in 1777 and its total defeat of a large British army provided French support for the American Cause. The winter campaign by George Rogers Clarke gave America tremendous respect. European Military Theory taught, "Armies do not march in winter." America turned that on its head. You can read in the Bible how King David stood on top of the mountain. The Philistines saw him there with his army and fled. Alexander the Great had not been able to conquer a city perched on a mountain. The Major Ferguson and his British Army felt safe on top of Kings Mountain in South Carolina. The Americans figured out how to destroy an army encamped on a mountain top. Europeans were impressed with the Americans figuring out a new military technique. At the battle of Cowpens the Americans pulled off a double envelopments, an extremely difficult but extremely effective military maneuver. Then, in the south, General Greene lost battles that he didn't really lose. At the Battle of Guilford Court House, Lord Cornwallace conquered the place. General Greene lost 400 men. Lord Cornwallace lost 2,800. At the end of the day, Lord Cornwallace moved his army out of there. He decided he could not afford to win another battle like that one. At the battle of Cold Harbor, General Greene attacked. The British retook the town. General Greene escaped with all of the supplies for the British Army. The Americans won the Battle of Yorktown when Lord Cornwallace surrendered.
