Well besides all the political pressure to "overtake" or make Britain and France allies the Germans also thought of Britain and France as strategic points in the war. So when the politics failed to overtake them Germany tried taking them with force.

Britain and France had a defence agreement with Poland. On 1st September 1939, German troops invaded Poland, so on 3rd September 1939, Britain and France declared war on Germany.
