Joseph Stalin most likely died from a stroke, the official cause of death listen as "cerebral hemmorage." Many have suggested that he was assassinated, and in 2003 the belief that Stalin was poisoned by warfarin-- a strong rat poison that inhibits coagulation(or clotting) or blood and put the person at a risk for cerebral hemmorrages-- was announced by a joint group of Americans and and Russians.

There are conflicting theories, but most of them say that he shot himself either in the head or the chest. (If you've seen the movie Downfall, he first shoots his wife Magda and then himself, although it is said the Magda Goebbels actually took poison.)

He (along with his wife) took his own life, although details of their suicides are uncertain. Some stories say he shot himself after he took cyanide? Some say he had an SS officer shoot him.
