Klaus von Stauffenberg was shot on the 21st of July, 1944. World War II was at it's height at that point.
He was executed by a firing squad, the day after the attempt on Hitler's life. July 21 1944 The worst part is about nine months later the allies stepped in. Stauffenberg married Nina Freiin von Lerchenfeld on 26 September, 1933 in Bamberg. They had five children: Berthold, Heimeran, Franz-Ludwig, Valerie, and Konstanze, who was born in Frankfurt on the Oder after Stauffenberg's execution. Berthold, Heimeran, Franz-Ludwig and Valerie, who were not told of their father's deed,[23] were placed in foster home for the remainder of the war and were forced to use new surnames, as Stauffenberg was now considered taboo. Nina died aged 92 on 2 April, 2006 at Kirchlauter near Bamberg, and was buried there on 8 April. Berthold went on to become a general in West Germany's post-war Bundeswehr, and Franz-Ludwig became a member of both the German and European parliaments. In 2008, Konstanze von Schulthess-Rechberg wrote a best-selling book about her mother, Nina Schenk Graefin von Stauffenberg. Describing her late husband, Nina von Stauffenberg said: He let things come to him, and then he made up his mind ... one of his characteristics was that he really enjoyed playing the devil's advocate. Conservatives were convinced that he was a ferocious Nazi, and ferocious Nazis were convinced he was an unreconstructed conservative. He was neither.[24]
Colonel Stauffenberg was the main player in Operation Valkyrie, an attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944. The operation almost succeeded, but Hitler survived and Stauffenberg was executed.
After the failed attempt to assassinate Hitler, Nina von Stauffenberg, Claus wife, was arrested by the Gestapo and taken into custody. Since the children did not know what their father had done, the government placed them in an orphanage in Bad Sachsa, Lower Saxony, under false names (Meister). Nina von Stauffenberg, who had been pregnant at the time of Stauffenberg's death, gave birth to her fifth child, Konstanze, on 17 January 1945, while imprisoned in a Nazi maternity center in Frankfurt. By the war's end, she had been moved to the Italian province of Bolzano-Bozen, where she was held as a hostage in return for the redemption of Nazi property. After the war, she was reunited with her family at the Stauffenberg family seat in Lautlingen, Baden-Württemberg. Nina von Stauffenberg died on April 2, 2006, aged 92, at Kirchlauter near Bamberg, Bavaria and was buried there on April 8. Her son, Berthold, graduated from Schule Schloss Salem and studied engineering before becoming an officer in West Germany's new army as soon as it was established in 1956. From 1972 to 1974, he was commander of Tank Battalion 11 at Munster, Lower Saxony, Germany's largest military base. His career culminated as Supreme Commander of Territorial Command South, and he retired in 1994 with the rank of Generalmajor, as Germany's oldest soldier after 38 years of service.
