Nicholas had problems like Rasputin and not listening to the Duma, the elected Parliment throughout his reign. However, the disregard for the lives being lost in the war and his spending money and food on the war when the people were poor and starving were what made the people decide to finally rebel.

The overthrowing of tsar Nicholas II was caused by abolition of the elected duma. Tsarina Alexandra dismissed this duma ( which caused a greater will for a revolution) in Nicholas' absence.

He used the army as a shield against people like Lenin and Trotsky. By 1912, the army started hating him and eventually was forced to leave the throne in 1917 (after WW1).

This occurred after the coming of Pyotr Stolypin ( the hated Prime Minister) who was unpopular. The tsar dismissed the finance minister Sergei Witte on accusations that he was unable to stop the spontaneous 1905 revolution.

Due to old techniques and poor economic structure many died hungry. This lead to riots. The army joined the public in 1912 and overthrew the tsar by 1917 causing the end the Romanov and The Monarchical Rule in the Russian Empire.
