* During 1918 there were many problems in the United States. One of these major problems was the influenza. Its symptoms were headaches, and queasy feelings in the stomach. This disease had infected the people of Denver, and other cities across the nation. Thousands had died from this. It proved fatal to more American soldiers than did the war itself. About 57,000 American soldiers died from influenza while the U.S. was at war: about 53,000 died in battle. * Everyone was being pressured to buy bonds from the government to help pay for the war. Not only our part of the war but also to help the foreign governments and their fight against Germany. * When President Wilson was asked to declare war, he knew that he needed the support of ALL Americans. (Nationalism) He said that he would involve "mobilization" or preparation, by citizens and business enterprises. Wilson warned that any disloyalty would be delt with firmly. Again with Nationalism. * To raise the war: Wilson raised income taxes, and organized a vigorous Liberty Bond campaign. Secretary of state also pressed for public financing. * In addition to raising money, the president initiated Conscription, or compulsory enrollment in the military service. U.S. hadn't enforced a draft since the civil war. * Many progressives, however, supported the war and the draft. They argued that the draft might prove to be a great equalizer. This equality might translate into reforms at home.

Germany, like other nations, was prepared to fight a war that hopefully would be over in a few months, not for the next 4 years. They had more than a million troops that fought on the western and eastern front, also in the Italian Alps(this is where a unknown officer in the Imperial German Army would use his cunning and smarts to out-think and out-maneuver the enemy in later years Lt. Erwin Rommel). They sent officers to help the Turks fight the Allies who landed in the Turks own back-yard-Gallipoli was one such slaughter For Britains own ANZAC troops who landed there. The Germans also fought in Africa, in the Far East against Japanese troops in the Chinese city of Tsingtao and also in the Atlantic ocean/North Sea. They fought the British fleet to a stand-still in 1916 in the Battle of Jutland Sea.

The first thing that the US did to prepare for war was pass the Nation Defense Act, changing the amount of soldiers in the army from about 90,000 to about 175,000, eventually leading to 450,000 troops. A few months late President Wilson passed a bill allowing $313 million to be given to build up the navy.

They then passed the Selective Service Act which required men of ages 21 to 30 to register with local draft boards (later changed to age 45). Training camps were made in 16 different locations in a matter of 60 days. When the men got to the camps, they went through medical exams and learned military rules and learning to fight..
