Mostly America's indigenous peoples had an oral history that included stories, songs, dances, rituals and customs.

Languages were rich and expressive. Ideas were exchanged in their cultures just as we exchange ideas today.

Their 'written word' was more symbolical, examples of which can be found on artifacts, such as beaded garments, winter count blankets and so forth. Some can still be seen on rocks and cliffs and in caves where they have not been vandalized.

Native Americans often spoke more than one language, especially if they lived in proximity to another tribe. If they could not communicate vocally, they would use hand gestures.
