For the most part receptively, but still bitter at the brutal tactics employed by the Union and the mess that became reconstruction. Reconstruction was really a failed effort after the assassination of Lincoln. Though Andrew Johnson had a very conciliatory approach to reconstruction, but being a southerner himself he failed to gather the support of Congressional Republicans and many Democrats. The final result was a bureaucratic mess of reconstruction that left the south broke and technologically backward. Even though the ending of slavery was a just cause, the north still acted unnecessarily unforgiving toward the south and left the south without an economy.

The real point is that southerners (then and now) resent northern states and politicians because of how poorly Reconstruction was carried out. In fact, its only been in the last 15 years that the automotive and aerospace industries have begun filling the economic void left by the forceful end of slave-driven agriculture.

Southerners didn't respond well, but really because of the massive incompetence of northern politicians.

To the Southern People, the Reconstruction was a way to steal the land away from the South. The first thing they did was to put a land tax on property which the southerners could not afford, then they made it illegal for anyone who fought on the southern side to hold any public office. They were going to reap the benefit of the cotton crop being ready to pick and take it to market. Many of the farmers lit their fields on fire rather than have it stolen by the northerners. Also the Politicians who were coming down to basically take over an office could not get elected up north. They were guaranteed an office down South because the southerners could not run for office!

They felt that the people who came to lead them through the aftermath of the Civil War were more interested in profiting from the situation than helping them. The derogatory term, Carpetbaggers, was used when referring to the northerners who came to lead.

White Southerners opposed Reconstruction because it gave political power to African-Americans. Whites' attitudes toward colored people was of superiority, and many were very racist and participated in the Ku Klux Klan.

Most Southern whites did not like Reconstruction and felt it was wrong. They were mad that they had lost the war and felt Blacks should not be given equal treatment.

They wanted equality and respectfulness in order to give them their freedoms. If the Southerners didn't like the concept Afican Americans were using, the would be cornered.

White southerns reacted poorly. Black southerns started to flourish until Jim Crow and lynchings pushed them back down socially.
