Basically the war ended when the allied forces forced German (axis) forces to surrender.

Some may argue that the Yalta conference of U.S., Soviet and British leaders did the trick, but the factual war ended after the German forces were overrun and Berlin was occupied (or "liberated", if we use the Soviet terms, which are still used by Soviet Union's successor, Russia).

The United States had the grueling task of saving Great Britain and then liberating France, which gave the Russians time to advance on the Germans after the German failure on the Eastern front. After Germany's last offensive (The Battle of the Bulge), the Western Allies pushed east into Berlin while the Russians pushed west.
