Following Lincoln's victory in the 1860 election, which meant no further extension of slavery, it was obvious that there would be secession.

The first state to secede was South Carolina, and six more followed by the time of Lincoln's inauguration.

After the firing on Fort Sumter, Lincoln appealed for new volunteer troops (the equivalent of declaring war), and four more states seceded.

The two sides were now lined-up.

As politely and formally as the 13 colonies seceded from Great Britain. A declaration was sent, and then Senator Jefferson Davis addressed the United States Congress.
