Britain had the best navy, so therefore all the soldiers got on ships and swam over to France. Then they usually walked to get to the next meeting point or the captain decided to get the train.

Airflight was in its infancy. So soldiers traveled In various military and commercial ships. The military ships were called troopships

The Americans when they came into the war used converted liners and steamers (e.g. ships similar to the large passenger ships like Titanic). A large passenger liner that carried 1000 passengers when converted could carry as many as 10,000 soldiers. Once on land they were often transported by train. The British army, for example, brought its own locomotives and carriages. Obviously the trains could not go all the way to the front so the troops had leave the trains (detrain) and march on foot the rest of the way or if they were lucky traveled by lorry (truck).

Trains were used for long distances, usually followed by a long hike to the front. There were exceptions however, during the First Battle of the Marne in 1914, 1,600 Parisian taxicabs rushed 6,000 reinforcements to the frontlines in defense of Paris.
Ships, trains and on foot.
