During normal working hours, they (The Viet Cong-VC) were pumping gas at the nearest filling station; or selling groceries in the local supermarket; or selling motorbikes at a town store. At night they became guerillas. In the Forests/Jungles/Swamps they would have "caches" (hidden) weapons & ammunition. They would have tunnels to store medical/food supplies. Agent Orange was deployed to remove those Forests/Jungles and other vegetation used for enemy cover & concealment. During the TET Offensive of '68, they came out in the open and fought "as regulars" in conventional battle; they hardly existed anymore after TET. The NVA (Northern Regulars) took over the fight from 1969 onward.
Why did American soldiers use Agent Orange? to detect Vietcong booby traps to disrupt the enemy's food supply to kill as many Vietcong guerrillas as possible to deter villages from harboring guerrillas
The Viet Cong used tunnels primarily as infiltration routes around South Vietnam. They would be able to move under ground to near their point of attack without being detected. After attacking a village or military they would return to the tunnel and disappear. They also could move supplies and cache weapons in them for later use. Some of the tunnels even had hospitals.
Not being a regular army like the NVA, the VC were forced to utilize mainly guerrilla tactics (hit & run).
Railroads were used in the Civil War to transport supplies and troops to the battlefield. Since the North had more of the railroads, they were able to use it greatly to their advantage, and it was one of the reasons they were able to win the war.
The Viet Cong's used Gorilla Warfare during the Vietnam War because with there landscape and territory that we had to fight in was so thick and full of trees and bushes that guns did not work because if you shot it you might hit a tree and they knew that hand to hand combat and setting up traps for the Americans or who ever else would walk into it, was the only way to sesesfully kill the Americans or anybody else and they were right. Hand to hand combat was rarely used by either sides during the Vietnam war. The General in command of US Forces in Vietnam once said that the US troops weren't familiar with the landscape and that it was 'A kind of trial and error'. This meant that they did not have an idea of what the war would be like and with too much confidence in the Amercian soldiers, 'The mere presence of US Forces would force them into quitting' (Philip Caputo, US Marine), the use of Guerilla tactics by the NLF Fighters or Vietcong, were far more effective than the tactics used by the US. Spike pits and underground tunnels, along with attack and disperse techniques were a major contribution to why the US was beaten. As a desperate solution, the US forces executed 'zippo raids' and used chemical weapons to try and wipe out the Vietcong, but as they did not wear a uniform, they were hard to identify and looked like 'villagers with guns'. Many civilians were killed by this technique, and also with massacres. Ultimately, the South Vietnamese support of the Amercians was lost and they began to supoprt North Vietnamese communist fighters, or the Vietcong. :)
The Vietcong's use of terror

The Vietcong were masters at guerrilla warfare. They would come and attack by surprise, then retreat before we had a chance to fight back.
The same advantage Frances Marion (the Swamp Fox) had over the British army in 1776, he knew the terrain. The VC were no different.
Please help me with this answer
the U.S. did not defeat the Viet Cong.
The Vietcong had planned for the war years in advance. First, they prepared their supply lines. They built the Ho Chi Minh Trail. It was not one road but a series of extremely narrow roads that merged and separated. The bridges were built underwater so they were not visible from the air. Thus they had simple supply lines with lots of built in redundancy. Second, they dug out caves to hide their solders. Thus their solders would hide during the day and come out during the night to fight. The caves also held their supplies and hospitals. Third, the Vietcong used extremely simple weapons. The AK-47 rifle is designed so that it will not jam. Thus a Vietcong could get mud all over his rifle and it would still work. It was not a fine crafted piece of machinery like the American weapons. Fourth, the Vietcong used weapons that took bullets and other ammunition one millimeter larger than American weapons. Thus, if the Vietcong captured American ammunition, they could use it. If the Americans captured Vietcong ammunition, it was worthless. Fifth, the Vietcong would kill the money lenders. In Asian societies many people owe money at a high rate of interest. The Vietcong would break that cycle. They would show the local people how they would deliver them from their oppression. Sixth, the Vietcong listened to American Generals talk. One American general said, "The Vietcong anti aircraft guns can not go over 6,000 feet. We will be safe if we fly at 10,000 feet. The Vietcong knew American airplanes would fly at 10,000 feet. They put their anti-aircraft guns on top of 6,000 feet high mountains. The guns would reach 12,000 feet. When a plane flew over at 10,000 feet, they would shoot it down.
Not very good ones cause America lost....
They seized the high ground and never relinquished it.
Yes But Only For Emergencies , But Unfornutanely There Are Some People That Take Advantage Of That & Use It For Other Stuff
