A: communism is only one aspect, the US were reluctant to enter Vietnam, they did so to support the French. In all truth this is the reason it started, as the French were key allies and players for the rebuilding of Europe and the US needed them. At the end of World War II Roosevelt stated that all colonies will be granted independance, Vietnam was denied independance by the French and conflict broke out.
Ho Chi Minh only turned to communism after the US decided to support the french. One thing many may not know is that Ho Chi Minh helped the US during and just after WWII, rescuing downed pilots. There is plenty of literature surrounding the prospect that Ho Chi Minh could have become an ally to the US if they had not supported the french and their violent suppression of the country seeking an end to colonialism.

The conflict emerged from the First Indochina War against the communist-led Viet Minh. Most of the funding for the French war effort was provided by the U.S. After the French quit Indochina in 1954, the US assumed financial and military support for the South Vietnamese state.
