Archduke Frank Ferdinand was murdered by a Serbian nationalist called Gavrilo Princip, in the City of Sarajevo in Bosnia. At the time, Bosnia was controlled by Austria-Hungary... where Ferdinand was from.

The Austro-Hungarians were fighting the Serb Nationalists who were trying to free Bosnia. When the Archduke was murdered, Austro-Hungary blamed it on Serbia, and when Serbia refused to take the blame, they declared war on her.

Russia had signed a pact to say that they would help Serbia if something like this happened. So Russia got ready to help.

Austro-Hungary and Germany are in an alliance, so Germany declares war on Russia for helping the Serbs to free Bosnia from Austria-Hungary.

France, Britain and Russia are all in an alliance too, so France prepares to help Russia... so Germany Declares war on France too.

The Germans then invaded Belgium, near France, using the Schlieffen Plan. This threatens France so Britain Declares war on Germany.

Austria-Hungary declare war on Russia, to help Germany, and so France and Britain declare war on Germany for declaring war on Russia... all this is because of the alliances.

It only became a world war because of the battling country's empires. So the countries around the world started fighting each other.

Because there was already tension in the air and the assassination was the boiling point. It was in Austria-Hungary (before they were separate countries.) and by a group called the Black Hand.
