The millions of taken lives weakened the old loyalty, though resentment at the settlement fuelled new separatist and crude statements in parts of Europe. Europe lost much of its hold over the minds of small populations who saw the bravery of local servicemen, their unfair treatment, waning European power and the imperial powers fighting amongst each other.
