The Great War was a Suffragette's dream. By 1916 so many men had been killed or wounded or were serving at the Front that someone needed to do all the jobs men had once done. Women stepped in, often for far less pay. But they showed the men they were capable of doing the same things, and that they were hard workers. This eventually led to them gaining the vote, although women had first been given the vote in the late 19th century in New Zealand.
Women learned they could do men's jobs, earn money, manage the household by themselves. Widows learned to be the primary bread winner. Women came together to achieve great things on the home front making the war victory possible. They learned to be leaders, organizers, fund raisers and nurses aids. Some women became nurses and many went on to be doctors. Women eventually had women's lib and really went forward.
The men of the house were off to war, leaving the women at home to take over their duties. Women were now doing men's work at home and some women even dressed drag and went off to war. Therefore, the Civil War opened many doors for women to have more opportunities for jobs they would normally not have even dreamt of.
Children were affected by the war for the obvious reasons of losing many of there loved ones. Many of the children were put into foster homes. Also, many young boys were eager to help out in the war. Most were ill prepared and lost their life in battle.
