== because doves are a symbol of peace.==

Doves in this case does not refer to Biology but to symbolism with the dove as a long and multicultural symbol of peace. Those called doves by the politicians and the media had a variety of reasons to oppose war:

It inherently kills people.

It kills poor people more then the rich.

It kills the undereducated more then the scholars.

It kills minorities at a higher rate then the racial majority.

It kills more in oppressed countries then in free and wealthy countries. In balance, people die in wars, the good, the bad and those on the sidelines. Some of those who did the shooting and caused the dying are forever impacted, just as their targets were. Wars are fought by heroic young men and women for reasons that political leaders deem important. They follow the instructions of their government. They serve, their choices are very limited, they cannot oppose the war. It is the duty and obligation of the press to inform the free citizens. It is the duty of the free citizens to support nor reject the motives of their political leaders. Doves or Hawks, two sides, flip the coin, hope that the high moral ground is the chosen route, but because this is the US, make your own choice, feel free to take the road less traveled.

The criticism of the war in Vietnam started out mainly as a conservative reaction to President Johnson’s policy of fighting for a limited purpose, a negotiated peace, rather than all out victory in Vietnam. Those critics included Senator Barry Goldwater, retired military men, and even some extreme members of the John Birch Society. These people were known as “hawks.” As the President escalated the war effort, and became a hawk himself, his chief critics became known as “doves” and included antiwar protesters, college students and faculty, liberal Democrats, and many other people in various walks of life who felt that the war was immoral, dragging on to no benefit for the US, and was causing increased casualty lists to mount. Many believed the US was fighting a war against the wishes of the majority of the Vietnamese people. These critics felt the war was a civil war in Vietnam between north and south and we had no business interfering. Some supported the communist effort in Vietnam and hoped for a defeat of the “imperialist capitalist” United States. Many Americans felt we were fighting a small, unimportant county, while the real enemy was China and the Soviet Union. There were many demonstrations against the war which took the form of sit ins in college and high school campuses, marches both for and against the war, and editorials written for and against the war. One of the most infamous demonstrations took place at Kent State University, 1970, when National Guard troops fired on Kent State students and protesters and four were killed and eleven were wounded.

The non-politically correct answer is that they were afraid of getting drafted into the military (or one of their loved ones). The politically correct answer is that they were for peace and against war.

Because everybody is different. Some people like cars, some people hate cars; some people love westerns (films), some people can't stand them; some people like Jazz Music, some people don't; some people love Pizza, some people can't stand pizza.

Doves believed in peace; the Dove (the bird) is the traditional symbol of peace. It is ironic though, that the peace sign of the 1960's does resemble the footprint of a chicken. In Vietnam, GI's called it the footprint of "the American Chicken", which was meant to mean draft dodgers were cowards; while at the same time, it did look like a chicken's footprint.
