The Marshall Plan was prompted by the U.S.'s policy of containment following WWII. The plan proposed U.S. economic aid to Europe to help the countries recover from the war. The idea was that by receiving aid to recover more quickly, the European nations would be strengthened and less vulnerable to the threat of communism.
