Of all of man's dealings, I believe suicide is the one most fraught with mistakes, errors, and general lack of success. After some millions of years of evolution, the resultant organisms (human in this case) are extremely resistant to obliteration, and can live through amazing injuries. This all works counter to the suicidal persons' intent.
Bottom line: It's very hard to commit suicide flawlessly.

So what have you got to lose by staying for the ride back up?
