At the time of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, Germany and Austria-Hungary were allies. When the Black Hand killed Ferdinand, Germany felt it was their place to step in and bring the Serbians into line, thus aiding their ally. Russian and Turkey had substantial Serbian populations and so were sympathetic to their cause. Around this time, the western world was engaged in forging alliances and better arming themselves against some impending attack. Tensions were high, and Germany had been engaged in activities of a volatile nature, like undermining French authority in Morocco. The assassination itself drove Germany and Austria-Hungary to attack the Balkans, and from there, other associated parties joined the war. I don't remember very well why exactly Germany attacked France, but it can be found in any history textbook or database.
