I don't know if the expression "the military leader of the US", is a good expression. What means to be "the military leader of the US"? Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the Commander In Chief was. Frank Jack Fletcher had only two stars rank at Coral Sea and Midway, and three stars rank at Eastern Solomon. He was the victorious leader of the American Carrier Task Forces in these three battles. From May 8th (Coral Sea) to August 24 (Eastern Solomon) both dates in 1942, he turned the ofensive capacity of Japanese into a Only defensive capacity. We could say perhaps that in this period, he was a leader, when most of the people were afraid and thought they were weak to fight the Japanes with success. Fletcher taught all of them to be victors despite the fear. It was not a long period, but a very important one. Captain Marvin E. Butcher said in an article about Fletcher: "Let we, who now presume to judge Admiral Fletcher, hope that we can perform as well should we be so tested at the onset of a war for national survival".
