A total of 27,524 were killed on Iwo Jima, the US also suffered 19,189 wounded and 494 missing, presumed dead, with the bodies not recovered. Of the Japanese forces defending the Island, only 216 were taken prisoner by the time that the Island was secured. It was assumed that all of the Japanese who had not been killed in action, or captured had taken their own lives. This proved to be an error when two men surrendered six years after the battle in 1951.

Did American soldiers get awarded with any medals of honor for the battle of Iwo Jima?

No American soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor for the battle of Iwo Jima, largely because no American soldiers fought the battle of Iwo Jima. (Marines get really mad if you call them soldiers, and Iwo Jima was a Marine action.) Twenty-three Marines and four sailors earned the Medal of Honor for this battle. Fourteen of the Medals were earned posthumously--the recipient died doing his heroic action. Only eighty-two Marines earned the Medal in all of World War II.
