The USA deployed 3 Marines Divisions, the 3rd, 4th and 5t. The 5th came from Hawaii, the 4th from Saipan and the 3rd from Guam. The initial assualt 0n 19 February 1945 was made by the 4th and 5th Divisions. The 28th regiment of the 5th Disivison made the well-known assualt on Mt. Suribachi and raised the US flag there on the 4th day, February 23. The 21st Marines and the 9th Marines on the 3rd Division landed on February 23. The battle continued for 35 days unil March 25. There was 28 Medals of Honor awarded for the Battle for Iwo Jima,13 of them posthumusly. The total US casualties exceeded 7800 killed and over 20,000 wounded or evacuated. The 5th Marine Division sustained the greatest nmumber of casualties. but more Medals of Honor were awarded to Marines and Navy Corpsmen assigned to the 4th Marine Division.
A total of 27,524 were killed on Iwo Jima, the US also suffered 19,189 wounded and 494 missing, presumed dead, with the bodies not recovered. Of the Japanese forces defending the Island, only 216 were taken prisoner by the time that the Island was secured. It was assumed that all of the Japanese who had not been killed in action, or captured had taken their own lives. This proved to be an error when two men surrendered six years after the battle in 1951.
70,000 US servicemen and 22,000 Japanese soldiers fought on Iwo Jima. All the Japanese died and 26,000 Marines died.
No American soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor for the battle of Iwo Jima, largely because no American soldiers fought the battle of Iwo Jima. (Marines get really mad if you call them soldiers, and Iwo Jima was a Marine action.) Twenty-three Marines and four sailors earned the Medal of Honor for this battle. Fourteen of the Medals were earned posthumously--the recipient died doing his heroic action. Only eighty-two Marines earned the Medal in all of World War II.
The Battle of Iwo Jima ended with nearly all Japanese troops dead. Some died fighting the American troops, some by suicide so they would not disgrace their homeland and be taken captive. The American forces lost a large number of troops as well in an effort to successfully push Japanese forces closer to their home. http://www.iwojima.com/
