i did a report a long time ago in school and researched this information. On average there were only about 35,000 combat soldiers in Vietnam, on the average. Which made up only about 10% of the total American soldiers in Vietnam. It takes alot of support personnel to take care of the logistics, administrative needs, and etc... for each combat soldier. The number of combat soldiers in Vietnam rose to approximately 50,000 combat soldiers during the Tet Offensive.
Discounting SF and SEALS; there may have been one combat jump, possibly by the 173rd Airborne Brigade. However, the 82nd Airborne did make a very short tour in Vietnam, and they possibly made a combat jump also. The Vietnam War was a transitioning war in which the "Airborne men" of WWII fame were being replaced by the new "Airmobile men" who rode helicopters into battle. The Commander in Vietnam, GEN Westmoreland was an "Airborne Man." His replacement, GEN Abrams was an "Armor Officer" (a tanker).

Originally the US had sent combat troops to Vietnam in 1965 to help fight communism which North Vietnam was trying to force on South Vietnam. The US involvement with South Vietnam ended in 1975 with the fall of Saigon. They had been allies with the South but after many casualties, pressure from protests in the USA, television coverage of the realities of warfare, and failure to beat the Viet Cong the US withdrew.

Because fossilisation is an imperfect process and many things are not preserved. This results in what appears to be jumps, when no such jump ever occurred.
Yes, many USAF Reserve squadrons flew combat missions in Vietnam; especially from the F100 Supersabre units.
There were no American deaths in Vietnam during the administration of Harry Truman. The first deaths occurred in 1959 under Eisenhower.
