When the Lodz Ghetto was sealed on 1 May 1940 it had population of 164,000. Only 900 survived ... However, the total number of deaths in Lodz was much higher than those figures suggest. The Nazis deported Jews from Lodz to Chelmno and moved in other Jews to replace them.
