The Japanese lost approximately 60,000 troops (only 7,000 surrendered), and the civilian population of the island killed by all causes numbered approximately 150,000. The total number of lives lost was approximately 225,000.

The US suffered approximately: 13,000 dead; 40,000 wounded, with 36 warships sunk, over 300 ships damaged, and nearly 800 airplanes destroyed. Japan suffered approximately: 60,000 dead, 22,000 wounded/captured, 16 warships sunk, and over 3,000 airplanes destroyed (the bulk of which were Kamikazes).
