78 people managed to escape through the tunnel during the Great Escape. Fifty of these were executed on Hitler's orders by the gestapo after being recaptured. 25 were recaptured, but were not shot. The remaining three made it back to neutral territory. Overall, 28 of the original 78 escapees survived.
