During the Civil War there were 24 states in the union including the Border States. This includes Maine,Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, California, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Wisconsin, Kansas, Vermont, Connecticut, New Jersey, Illinois, Iowa, Oregon, and many others. The "border states" are Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, Missouri, and West Virginia.
34 states were involved at the start of the American Civil War. 11 states seceeded to form the Confederate States of America, 19 remained in the Union and 4 border states fought on both sides. West Virginia split from Virginia to add 1 to the Union total, officially becoming a state in 1863. Then, Nevada joined the Union in 1864, making the total of "state" involvement by the end of the war 36.
