According to some sources, there were 3 US Marine Corp tank battalions on Iwo Jima; fighting against the Japanese 26th Tank Regiment (which had a reduced strength of 22 or 23, Type 95 (light) and Type 97 (medium) tanks). A normal US Army tank battalion of the 1960's was approximately 57 tanks per battalion.

The US Marine Corps deployed approximately 150 M-4 Sherman tanks during the month (plus) long battle of Iwo Jima; of which approximately 50 tanks were destroyed. Within the next (approximately) 60 days from the Iwo Jima fight; the combined US Army & US Marines fighting on Okinawa would deploy about 354 M-4 Sherman tanks, losing approximately 156 Shermans to Japanese forces.
