In World War One, the soldiers survived by digging up trenches. Trenches are holes dug in the ground, sort of how worms dig into the ground but bigger. These trenches were what they lived in for 4 straight years.

It may be that democracy survived in the US after WW I because the US was on the winning side, but I rather think that it would have survived even had the war ended differently.
